Gonorrhea: Symptoms, Risks, and Why Early Testing Matters

Gonorrhea is one of the oldest and most common sexually transmitted infections in the world. Caused by the bacterium Neisseria gonorrhoeae, it affects millions of people annually and is becoming increasingly difficult to treat due to rising antibiotic resistance. Early detection is more important than ever.

How Is Gonorrhea Transmitted?

Gonorrhea is spread through unprotected vaginal, anal, or oral sex. It can infect the genitals, rectum, and throat. It cannot be transmitted through casual contact such as hugging, sharing food, or touching surfaces.

Symptoms of Gonorrhea

Like Chlamydia, Gonorrhea often causes no symptoms, particularly in women. This is why regular testing is essential for anyone who is sexually active.

Symptoms in Men

  • Thick yellow or white discharge from the penis
  • Painful or burning sensation when urinating
  • Swollen or painful testicles (less common)

Symptoms in Women

  • Increased or unusual vaginal discharge
  • Painful urination
  • Bleeding between periods
  • Abdominal or pelvic pain

Throat and Rectal Infection

Gonorrhea can also infect the throat (from oral sex) or rectum (from anal sex). These infections are almost always asymptomatic.

Complications of Untreated Gonorrhea

If not treated, Gonorrhea can cause severe complications:

  • In women: Pelvic inflammatory disease, increased risk of ectopic pregnancy, infertility
  • In men: Epididymitis, prostatitis, and in rare cases infertility
  • In both: Increased susceptibility to HIV

Gonorrhea and Antibiotic Resistance

Gonorrhea has developed resistance to many antibiotics over the decades, earning it the label of a "superbug" by some health organizations. This makes early diagnosis and prompt treatment even more critical — the sooner it is caught, the more treatment options are available.

When to Test

Test for Gonorrhea if you've had unprotected sex, have new or multiple partners, or are experiencing any of the symptoms above. Experts recommend testing within 2–6 days of potential exposure, or after 1 week for highest accuracy.
